The windiest time in Fuerteventura is in the summer when a big high pressure sits over the Atlantic and a low over the Sahara. These combine to give reliable cross-shore winds. The swells which bring the best waves are caused by depressions in the Atlantic which are more prevalent in winter. The NE trade winds blow throughout the year, although they tend to move up & down the Atlantic. In summer, which is the windy period, the trades can start to blow as early as March and as late as May. Contrary to popular belief the trade winds are not strong winds; only about 3 Bft. on the open sea. However around Fuerteventura there is acceleration zones where the wind is either funneled between mountains or islands and where the wind can sometimes increase to as much as 8 - 9 Bft. These trades are normally onshore or cross-on. Flag Beach is located just outside the village of Corralejo and 6km from Casa De Verano it's a 400m long bay protected by reefs at both ends, offering flat water on the inside. Flag Beach is probably the best all-round sailing spot in the north of the island with waves in the winter and flat water slalom and freestyle sailing in the summer months.
